Cambodia: Killing fields timeline

1925: Saloth Sar, alias Pol Pot, born in central Cambodia.

1949: Pol Pot goes to Paris the place he joins a gaggle of younger Cambodian revolutionaries, most of them Marxists.

1953: France grants independence to Cambodia below King Norodom Sihanouk; Pol Pot returns to Phnom Penh, trains with Vietnamese communist guerrillas, then works for his trigger within the countryside.

1969: Secret U.S. bombing raids start towards Vietnamese communist guerrillas hiding in Cambodia.

1970: Sihanouk deposed by U.S.-backed strongman Lon Nol; the Khmer Rouge and Sihanouk be a part of forces towards the nationalists.

1975: The victorious Khmer Rouge arrive in Phnom Penh and evacuate town; communal farms and work camps are established within the countryside; kids older than 7 are separated from their dad and mom.

1976: A brand new structure is adopted and the nation is renamed Democratic Kampuchea; disenchanted, Sihanouk elements methods with the Khmer Rouge, in search of refuge in North Korea and China.

1977: Conflict begins with long-time enemy Vietnam.

1979: Vietnamese troops enter Phnom Penh and set up a puppet authorities with present Prime Minister Hun Sen as one of many prime officers; Khmer Rouge pushed into the countryside.

1985: Khmer Rouge publicly denounces communism however continues to wage warfare within the north and west.

1989: Vietnam formally withdraws from Cambodia.

1997: Khmer Rouge tribunal established by Cambodia and U.N.

1998: Demise of Pol Pot.

2006: Demise of Ta Mok, “The Butcher,” whereas in jail, awaiting trial.

2010: Commandant Duch discovered responsible of crimes towards humanity and sentenced to 35 years in jail. 4 prime Khmer Rouge leaders indicted, together with head of state Khieu Samphan, international minister Leng Sary and Pol Pot’s second in command Nuon Chea. All are older than 75.
