A younger woman who was wounded by gunfire as she waited to see a mall Easter Bunny in Victorville was allegedly shot by a shoe service provider who fired a gun at fleeing shoplifters, authorities stated Wednesday.

The incident occurred round 6:30 p.m. Tuesday as 9-year-old Ava Chruniak waited to get her photograph taken with the Easter Bunny on the Mall of Victor Valley, in line with her grandmother, Robin Moraga-Saldarelli.

In response to investigators with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Division, gunfire erupted when the co-owner of a shoe retailer, Sole Addicts, chased two shoplifters out of the shop and allegedly fired a gun at them.

The photographs missed the shoplifters and hit the 9-year-old as an alternative, police stated. She was transported to the Loma Linda College Medical Middle in secure situation.

The 9-year-old is affected by two gunshot wounds and a damaged arm, stated her mom Natalie Moraga in a GoFundMe created for her medical bills.

The shoe vendor, Marqel Cockrell, 20, of Adelanto, fled the scene after the taking pictures, police stated. He was discovered by Nevada Freeway Patrol at about 9 p.m. in his automobile.

Cockrell is being held on suspicion of tried homicide on the Clark County Jail in Nevada on an extraditable warrant. His bail has been set at $1 million, police stated.
