To the editor: Studying about Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva’s threatened investigation of a Instances journalist for reporting a division coverup of a jail altercation highlights the whole lot incorrect with legislation enforcement within the U.S.
I'm not a proponent of actually defunding the police. Nonetheless, the position and mindset of legislation enforcement officers as represented by Villanueva are in want of drastic reimagining.
The “us” versus “them” bigotry of Joe Arpaio in Arizona and David Clarke in Wisconsin demonstrates a failed and antiquated mind-set that appears to be extra the norm than the exception. They act as if legislation enforcement officers are above the legislation and might use any means they need in interactions with members of most people, whom they understand as their enemies.
Villanueva’s strategy does completely nothing to advertise public security and additional encourages abuses of energy by these for whom he's accountable.

To the editor: I used to be a sworn member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Division for 30 years. I labored for 3 sheriffs throughout that point.
Whereas all of them had their character quirks and ranging priorities, I've to say that, from what I’ve seen of Villanueva, we’re coping with a nascent “constitutional sheriff.” That is somebody heading a legislation enforcement company who picks and chooses from a smorgasbord of laws, accepting the legal guidelines he finds appetizing and rejecting those he finds distasteful.
Voters ought to mirror on whether or not they need a accountable legislation enforcement official who's accountable to the folks, or a feudal lord solely in controlling his fiefdom.

To the editor: From the second he was elected sheriff, Villanueva has ignored requirements and acted extra like a dictator than a public servant constrained by the very guidelines he's presupposed to uphold.
It's outrageous that he's utilizing his authority to intimidate and retaliate in opposition to a reporter as a result of it has been alleged he directed a coverup. I hope the upcoming election lastly settles all of this.
P.S.: I hope Villanueva’s retaliation doesn’t prolong to letter writers.
