Letters to the Editor: Carbon capture is an excuse to burn more fossil fuels. Don’t do it

The Phillips 66 refinery looms over a Wilmington neighborhood.
The Phillips 66 refinery looms over a Wilmington neighborhood. Opponents of carbon seize plans say they're a lifeline for the fossil gas business.

To the editor: Whereas there could also be a spot for carbon seize expertise in sure industries, the fossil gas business will not be one among them. We all know the answer for stopping the emissions from oil drilling, and it’s fairly easy: Cease drilling for oil. (“California hopes to combat international warming by pumping CO2 underground. Some name it a ruse,” July 25)

If capturing the carbon dioxide emitted from the Elk Hills pure fuel energy plant close to Bakersfield can be equal to taking 300,000 automobiles off the street, then let’s shut that energy plant.

We should be laser-focused on ending our dependence on oil and fuel by decarbonizing the electrical grid, transportation and housing, not extending the lifetime of the fossil gas business.

To the editor: As a robust environmentalist however not an extremist, I help the carbon seize and storage initiatives, with the proviso that we negotiate the plan of motion when a number of elements of the initiatives fails or performs beneath specs.

As a result of for certain there can be failures, and we don’t wish to negotiate underneath the strain of undesirable, harmful ongoing emissions and air pollution.

To the editor: Has the Aliso Canyon methane leak light from reminiscence after solely six years? You can not retailer a fuel underneath strain underground. It is going to leak out.

That is dumb. Don’t do that.

To the editor: Extra madness within the identify of saving the atmosphere.

Construct pipelines from coastal energy vegetation to convey stack emissions to the Central Valley? Use electrical energy, a lot of it generated by fossil vegetation themselves, to run the pumps to pressurize the emissions for burial?

The straightforward reply to international warming is reasonable clear electrical energy, with a mix of renewables and, sure, nuclear power.
