To the editor: Due to Nicholas Goldberg for his column “Will California honor its 150-year-old promise to maintain UC inexpensive?

As a single mother in 2007, I did my very own cost-benefit evaluation and determined that I may afford tuition at California State College campuses.

One son went to Cal Poly Pomona and was employed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The opposite son graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and works at a significant writer. My youthful son complained he couldn’t get interviews at Google and different distinguished employers as a result of he didn’t go to a extra prestigious college, the place his buddies who bought employed by Google went.

Each sons had a wonderful schooling with out incurring debt. I'm a product of the California group school system and UC Irvine. As an grownup, I proceed to take programs at our glorious group faculties.

The extent of instruction at each our very inexpensive group faculties and state universities is nearly as good (or higher!) than that of costliest universities within the nation. We Californians fortunately have choices.

To the editor: Goldberg’s column didn't current the scenario in its historic context.

Once I joined the UC school in 1979, we obtained nearly 80% of our core funding for teachers from the state. On the time I retired in 2005, this had been lowered to about 60%. Now it's lower than half.

The blame lies squarely on selections made by current state governors and our Legislature.

To the editor: The current UC tuition system is self-defeating. The outdated adage that the street to hell is paved with good intentions applies right here.

Goldberg factors out that college students whose family revenue is under $80,000 pay no tuition. The present median family revenue in California is simply over $80,000. Thus, youngsters from half of all households pay no tuition, whereas these from the opposite half pay.

In distinction, President Franklin D. Roosevelt insisted there be no means take a look at on Social Safety so all employees could be invested in its safety. As we speak, solely half of all California households view UC as inexpensive, and the opposite half pay each taxes and tuition for his or her youngsters to attend.

Lower tuition in half, apply it to all, use grants primarily based on want, and get all California households invested in defending UC affordability.

To the editor: A really massive a part of the issue is the dramatic improve in directors employed by the UC system.

I went to UC San Diego within the late Nineteen Seventies, and it value $750 per yr. Final yr my youngster obtained a UCLA grasp’s diploma, and it value about $15,000 yearly (despite the pandemic, and digital lessons will not be good for music efficiency college students).

Nobody can inform me that the standard of schooling has elevated 20 occasions in 50 years. What do all these directors really do? They don’t train, that’s for certain.

In truth, in 2015 The Instances reported on this very situation within the article “Is UC spending too little on educating, an excessive amount of on administration?
